Chart of Accounts
The Chart of Accounts (COA) is the structural foundation of your entire financial system. It provides a categorized, hierarchical listing of every account in your General Ledger, ensuring that all financial transactions are recorded in a logical, standardized manner.
Hierarchical Account Structure
Agora uses a classic numbered account hierarchy following international accounting conventions. This allows for deep categorization while maintaining high-level summary reporting.
Standard Account Ranges:
Managing the COA Tree
The dashboard displays your accounts in a visual tree structure, showing clear parent-child relationships and current account balances at a glance.
To add a new ledger account:
- Navigate to Accounting → Chart of Accounts and click Create.
- Assign an Account Number that fits within your existing hierarchy.
- Define the Account Name and its core Account Type (Asset, Liability, etc.).
- Select a Parent Account if this is a sub-account (e.g., nesting "Internet Expense" under "Utility Expenses").
- Define the Normal Balance expectation (Debit or Credit).
Real-World Use Cases
- Granular Expense Tracking: Creating specific 6xxx sub-accounts for "Facebook Ads" and "Google Ads" nested under a parent "Marketing Expense" account to analyze ad spend ROI.
- Bank Account Segregation: Setting up distinct 1xxx Asset accounts for your "Operating Checking Account" and "Payroll Reserve Account" to mirror your actual banking structure.
- Tax Liability Segmentation: Creating separate 2xxx Liability accounts for State Sales Tax, City Tax, and Federal Withholding to simplify quarterly tax reporting.
Build a rock-solid financial foundation with Agora's hierarchical Chart of Accounts.
